Landscaping is said to
increase home value by as much as 20 percent!
Overgrown and visual clutter doesn't sell - rethink
the gnome family. Yellow draws attention and evokes a
buying emotion. Curb appeal is said to be a "15
second" decision! |

Remember basics:
Edge, mow, rake, trim, fertilize, mulch and water.

Bougainvillea

What is your
advice about planting during the drought?
It is too hot and dry to do any large scale
planting now, but you can still make quite a
show with some high impact blooming plants in
containers. Limiting your planting to these
showy hot weather tolerant flowers limits the
amount of time that you are out in the heat
and also does not require an extravagant
amount of water. Consider bougainvillea,
pentas, vincas, hibiscus, and moss roses for
your “limited planting strategy” until the
rains begin again. |

Does using food
coloring in their sugar water hurt the hummingbirds?
As far as I know there is no research that documents
any threat to hummingbirds from food coloring. We like
the color in the feeder and we think the birds find
the sugar water sooner. It probably is not needed to
attract the birds especially for feeders that have
already been found by the birds. |

Firebush &
Lantana - Hot Weather Bloomers. By Dr. Jerry
Parsons. Throw the humming bird feeder away.
The red blooms of Firebush attract humming
birds from miles away. Firebush is native to
our hot, dry climate. Your Lantana had proved
it's usefulness as a bedding plant because of
it's bushy, spreading character. Both Firebush
and "New Gold" Lantana have been designated
Texas SuperStar plants. READ THE ARTICLE. |

Fruits, Blooms, Herbs
& Vegetables in Containers. By Dr. Calvin Finch.
In the heat of summer some of your most successful
gardening will be done in containers. There are a wide
range of plants that can be well cultivated in
containers making them portable and therefore suitable
for patios and balconies. But you have to be careful
to select varieties that will thrive as container
plants. READ

July is an Important
Month in the Garden. By Dr. Calvin Finch. Don't
let this summer's dryness and heat stop you. The
chores that you get after in July will make a big
difference in your landscape this autumn when the cool
weather of South Texas' "second spring"
replenishes
our landscapes and country sides. READ

The
Pride-of-Barbados, also called The Mexican
Bird of Paradise, has long been a favorite for
hot tropical landscapes where is provides a fiesta
of vibrant color throughout the year. This
